Lets Talk

Ladies, can we talk about breast feeding? I need to say that whoever says its "beautiful" or "wonderful" is smoking crack. Eddie says he thinks its beautiful because it shows how willing I am to sacrifice for Archie and it shows how much I love him. I thought when I shoved a square through a circle I was showing my willingness to sacrifice. I know I'll be sacrificing for this cute guy for my whole life, BUT COME ON! Can we stop with the physical pain?? When can I be done proving my love?! And in those few moments where it really doesn't hurt, which are actually getting pretty frequent (I'm a dramatic person), its just the most obnoxious thing. I feel like its akin to Chinese Water Torture, just something repetitive and so .... dang ... annoying. Not to mention when this yanking is going on there are most likely dishes in the sink that you can't stop thinking about how they need to be put away. Please, tell me it will get better! My baby is 6 1/2 weeks old, will it ever completely stop hurting or will I ever feel like my life revolves around anything besides my breast pump again?!?!

But then he looks at me with these eyes and I stop my complaining.

Oh my sweets! First, I'm sorry. I heard it's pretty painful and it's not so much that the pain goes away but you just get used to it? I am not going to say I understand exactly what you're going through because I don't. I actually haven't been able to nurse/pump because I have very little supply for my kiddo. I mean is it worth it? I think so in the long scheme of things but is it worth it if it's making you a frustrated mom/wife? Probably not. You'll figure out what's good for you and the babe. I just wish, for me, I could nurse, pain or no pain.

I had the same experience with Hailey. If I hadn't been SO determined to breastfeed I would have given up. At about the point you are now, it definitely got better...and then I loved it. With my other kids it was easy from the start.
Try to think of the good things about it-like no getting up in the middle of the night and warming a bottle. It's always there at just the right temperature, sterile, and yummy. And bottle fed babies don't smell as nice:) Plus, when he starts getting really busy it will be the only time he will let you sit and hold him!
With that said, it really is a very personal decision. I wanted to let you know I felt the same way and I definitely "came around".

Good luck! He is SO beautiful.

It definitely gets better and doesn't hurt at all after a while. I'm sure the timeline is different for everyone, but for me it was when he was around 12-14 weeks. Aidan had a lot of problems with breastfeeding from the beginning, though.

I used some of these gel soothers from Target (I think) that helped. Going to the lactation consultant really helped us. I realized he wasn't latched very well which was contributing to some pain. Talking to other women that breastfeed is also helpful. I use kellymom.com a lot when I have breastfeeding questions.

Hang in there! Good luck!

I remember it being SO painful with Ethan until he was about 8 weeks old and then it was so easy and painless after that. Hang in there, I promise it will get so much better and quicker. Both of my kids got to the point of being able to eat in 5 min tops. It's worth it!

Oh boy! I totally understand. It does get better and it doesn't hurt any more and they get super quick at eating. The first couple of months with any baby is rough, in my opinion. I am grateful for my kids, but I never look forward to the newborn stage. Hang in there. You won't hate it so much. But, for the record, there are those of us out there that do it because it's healthy and inexpensive, etc. but I have never been one of those moms that misses breastfeeding when it's over and the bonding between my kids and me doesn't happen during feeding time, even when it does get quick and easy. I always celebrate the milestone of finishing the breastfeeding phase.

Thanks for this post Bree. As someone who is trying very hard to get it down I'm really glad I'm not alone.
